About

The year is 2021. It’s spring and even in San Diego everything is a little greener. The days are getting longer, and we are beginning to feel like it’s time to emerge from a dormant period...an almost otherworldly latent time heightened by a year of living within the limitations of a pandemic. A feeling of being stuck replayed in the new reality of our lives: in the way we have been quite literally stuck in our homes observing social distancing, as well as professionally and creatively stuck with both a lack of opportunity and an abundance of anguish.

Getting unstuck requires curiosity, allowing a space for freedom and growth, moving from participation to experience. Hands need to get a little dirty, weeds need to be cleared, maintenance and mindfulness mixed with playfulness and experimentation.

The yard provides that space, and the work takes us out of the mundane into a place where there is room for process and discovery. There is no client, no institution, and no limitations, other than an 8’x8’ wall and the amount of time an artist is willing to exercise and create. YARDWORK invites artists to develop their creative practice in a new way, to breathe, to stretch, to play, and to enjoy whatever the days may bring.
